Scouts from St Mary’s Troop 128 regularly sponsor a meeting to assist Webelos in their bridge into Boy Scouts, but this is no ordinary meeting.
This is the Readyman event, one of the requirements for Webelos to earn their Arrow of Light .
Troop 128 Boy Scouts prepare for the skills to be taught at this event in many ways, using skills needed for rank advancement, and days of practice in first aid.
First, the Boy Scouts lecture, using short skits, with props on how to pulloff each first aid maneuver. The Webelos observe as scouts show them important actions, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the Heimlich Maneuver and response techniques to snakebites, blisters, severe bleeding, poisonings, shock, and first, second, and third degree burns.
This prepares Webelos to gear up to challenge their knowledge at each of the five testing stations
Webelos try each of the testings. The Boy Scouts work with them, correcting them when needed, until they achieve most tasks to earn their Readyman activity pin.
Throughout the skill session, adults have the opportunity to meet with troop parents, where they are presented with Boy Scout information, and can ask questions. Scouts and parents also had a chance to try the delicious treats that troop parents brought in.
At the end of the November meeting, Scout Leaders Scott Kiefer, Donna Davis-Daisley, and John McKenna presented the Webelos with a handshake and a certificate. You could see from their faces from the start that they were as happy as can be.
The Readyman event proves to be a truly fun and exhilarating meeting for both Troop 128 scouts and participating Webelos.
Troop 128 sponsors Webelos events, such as Outdoorsman and flag retirement ceremonies, and continues to take part in the Webelos Open House, sponsored annually by Clinton Valley Council.
Our next Readyman Activity is offered to Lake Orion packs in February. Packs interested in participating in any of these events should contact our troop Leaders at LOTroop128@aol.com.
