Brandon Twp.- They do everything from tutoring at the library, to cleaning up the yards of senior citizens, to donating time to the local food pantry, to donating their hair to cancer patients, to helping build a park.
They are the youth of this community and at 6:30 p.m., March 13, at the Brandon High School Performing Arts Center, 1025 S. Ortonville Road, 110 of these young volunteers will be honored during the Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance Youth Recognition Awards.
‘To be nominated, they need to volunteer within their community over and above what would be expected of members of the National Honor Society or Scouts, or a church youth group,? says Gina Muzzarelli, chairperson for Youth Recognition.
Alan Blackburn met that calling and will be among those honored Thursday night. The 16-year-old sophomore and Ortonville Rotary Club volunteer was nominated by Parks and Recreation Director Fred Waybrant for his dedication to the development of the new community park.
‘Whenever workers are needed at the park, (Alan) is the first to arrive and the last to leave,? Waybrant wrote in the nominating form. ?(Alan) learned two new skills? tree planting by hand and running and excavator to level the rock quarry play area.?
