Addison teen earns $12,500 scholarship to Albion College

Attending college became a little less expensive for Addison resident Angela Bennett.
Angela, a 2008 Lake Orion High School graduate and daughter of Addison Township clerk Pauline Bennett and Lapeer resident Danny Bennett, has received Albion College’s Webster Scholarship worth $12,500.
The merit-based scholarship is given for ‘superior academic achievement? and may be renewed each year by students who maintain specified academic standards.
In a press release, Albion officials said that more than 85 percent of first-year students have earned such scholarships, and that this is a reflection on the college students? abilities.
‘We reward good students for working hard in high school and preparing themselves for the academic workload that they will experience at Albion,? said Doug Kellar, Albion’s vice president for enrollment management. ‘Our academic scholarships assist a high percentage of our students in covering the cost of an Albion education, an investment that for many appears to be an unaffordable option when they look at the sticker price alone.?
Bennett, 18, plans to major in economics and management along with public policy, something her mother knows a little bit about as a voting member of Addison’s township board.
Bennett first learned of the scholarship when she began applying to study at Albion. Receiving this large award was a complete surprise and one she’s extremely thankful for.
‘This will help me with the cost of college in a big way, but I still need to acquire additional scholarships and loans for the duration of my college experience,? she said. ‘Albion college has a very beautiful campus, full of friendly staff and faculty who truly care about your success. The fact that Albion made me feel at home the moment I arrived, even though my home town was over two hours away was the deciding factor for me.?
Her mother added: ‘I was ecstatic and very happy for her and proud of her.?
As for her future career plans, Bennett said she’s wanted to be an attorney ‘for as long as I can remember? and currently aspires to become a corporate lawyer.
Albion College, located in Albion, Mich., and about 30 miles east of Battle Creek, is a liberal arts college that focuses on the professional preparation for law, medicine, education, management and the sciences.
It has been named since 2004 to The Princeton Review’s Top 10 list for ‘More to Do on Campus? and has been named for a third straight year as one of ?40 Great Colleges at Great Prices? in U.S. News & World Report’s ‘America’s Best Colleges.?
