Meet your village council candidates

The deadline to withdraw candidacy was June 26 so Ryan Curtis’s name will appear on the ballot. However, he plans to move outside village limits after the election, making him ineligible for a council seat. Should he be elected, he would serve until leaving the village, at which time the council would appoint someone to fill the vacancy.

Family information: My wife, Jan, and I have been residents of the village for seven years.
Employment: St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland Mental health technician in the behavioral medicine department and Greens of Rochester as a sales representative in the art education department.
Education/background: Associate Degree in applied science with emphasis in the behavioral sciences.
Organizations/clubs: Support group facilitator for Safe Harbor Prevention Services working with clients with substance abuse issues, a mentor for Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency working with clients returning to society through the prisoner re-entry program, and my wife and I are sixth grade Sunday School teachers at our church, member of the Board of Zoning Appeals for the village, election inspector for the township, and I help to promote and establish the village’s municipal Web site.
Reasons for running: To preserve a safe environment for our families; seek ways to secure our home and property values in this current economy; encourage and improve communication for a stable relationship between businesses, residents , and village; and, above all, I want to preserve our small-town setting and values that make this a strong, close-knit community.
Biggest issues the next Village Council will face: Completing improvements to Flint and Broadway Streets as well as maintaining the village’s infrastructure; keeping the downtown active and alive to promote a friendly atmosphere that will draw people to patronize our businesses; maintaining the village’s budget and expenditures; work along with the police department to keep in check the problem of drug abuse that has caused tragic events in our community this year.

Family information: Married 34 years to Donna, has a son Anthony (Christina), and granddaughter, Hailey.

Education/background: High school graduate and Michigan licensed builder. My wife and I own and maintain other business and investment properties.
Organizations/clubs: Lake Orion Downtown Development Authority and Orion Chamber of Commerce.
Reasons for running: We need to make it easier to get things done. There seems to be a lack of ‘get it done,? and more of how we can drag it out.
Biggest issues the next Village Council will face: The budget will be the biggest problem that will need to be solved.

Family information: One daughter and three grandchildren.
Employment: Self-employed for the past thirty years.
Education/background: Attended Bob Jones University, apprenticeship training and various continuing educational classes.

Reasons for running: To give back to the community through my ideas and experience; to help with the growth and development of the city; and help maintain the village’s budget.
Biggest issues the next Village Council will face: The village will be facing some very difficult issues regarding the budget. Due to decreasing property values and homeowners wanting a fair property evaluation of decreases, how are we going to maintain the same services for the Village?

Family information: Wife of 7 years, Annalisa, sons Benjamin, 6, and Noah 2 and a half.
Employment: Kingsbury School Athletic Director and Physical Education teacher, freshman volleyball coach at Stoney Creek High School.
Education/background: Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology
Reasons for running: I like to believe that I am fairly reasonable and I think that the Council can always use someone who is reasonable and willing to look at the issues from all points of view without dwelling on the past.
Biggest issues the next Village Council will face: The Village is financially sound which is the problem facing most communities now. I wouldn’t say that the Village has any big issues coming up. We need to continue to grow the Village while maintaining the vacation-like atmosphere.

Family information: One of eleven children.
Employment: Self-employed
Education/background: Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Reasons for running: I desire to serve my local community to uphold our quality of living. Electing me will enhance the diversity of the council and bring a fresh approach because I come from the community-at-large and have never held a prior elected position. Because of my educational background, I can deeply explore the issues the council will face. With my past volunteer work in the community, namely at the Orion Senior Center, I have a strong understanding of the needs of seniors and their families. I promise to fulfill my position when elected by proper oversight of the budget, through fiscal responsibility and by providing the high level of services to which the village residents have become accustomed.
Biggest issues the next Village Council will face: Because property values have lowered, less revenue is being generated. We must find ways to maintain the high level of services to which the village residents have become accustomed. One solution is to encourage commerce by inviting businesses to fill the empty storefronts in downtown Lake Orion.
