GOODRICH- Despite losing in the final round of the GAC Red Division league meet on Saturday, Feb. 22, the Martian volleyball team is still celebrating victory.
Even though Byron won the match up, Goodrich earned enough points to stay one half point ahead of the Eagles for the championship.
Goodrich drew a bye and started the day playing the waiting game in the tournament held at Montrose. The Martians’ first round of play then handed them a loss to Mt. Morris, 17-19, 10-15. Despite the loss, the girls gathered their momentum to defeat Lake Fenton, 15-11, 15-10, LakeVille 15-10, 15-8 and Mt. Morris 12-15, 17-15, 15-7.
In the meet Julie Owen was 57-for-65 serving with six aces and 54 digs. Rebecca Scott was 44-for-48 serving with five aces, and 89 of 100 passing, with 65 kills and 145 digs, while Christina Saindon was 29-for-29 serving with 114 digs and was 36 of 38 passing.
Natalie McCormick was 38-for-45 serving with four aces, 44 of 50 passing, had 29 kills and 94 digs. Freshman Tara Garman was 36-for-46 serving with four aces, 22 kills and 10 blocks, while Lisa Shaw was 26-for-27 serving with two aces, 15 kills and seven blocks.
Marissa Missura took 12 kills and six blocks for the day, while Lauren Heidenderger had six kills. Denica Brooks had 39 digs and was 17 of 23 passing.
The Martians advanced to the district playoffs at Clio High School on Saturday, March 1, however, no scores were available by press time. Goodrich finished regular season play with an overall record of 19-11-10, and were 12-4 in league.
