Oxford High School’s Theater Company is performing a classic play about royalty with sleep disorders and the whole community’s invited to see it free of charge.
On Sunday, May 23 at 3 p.m., the talented troupe of actors and actresses will present ‘The Princess and the Pea.?
Admission to the 45-minute show is free for both adults and children. This is the Theater Company’s third year putting on a free performance.
‘We like to do it for the community to thank them for supporting us throughout the year,? said Debra Brown, the company’s adviser. ‘We also like to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy some type of theater during the year.?
For those who aren’t familiar with this timeless children’s story written by 19th century Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, it’s the tale of a young woman whose royal identity is established by a test of her physical sensitivity.
In the 1835 story, a woman’s claim to be a princess is put to the test by having her sleep atop 20 mattresses and 20 featherbeds. Unbeknownst to her, a single pea has been placed underneath the mountain of bedding. If she feels the pea, she’s truly a princess and can marry the prince.
Don’t miss the Theater Company’s final show of the year, the Senior Showcase, on Wednesday, May 26 at 7 p.m.
According to Brown, the company’s graduating seniors have produced their own one-and-a-half-hour show featuring them performing individually and in groups.
‘It’s kind of their farewell to everyone and a way to say thank you,? she said.
Admission to the Senior Showcase is $2 for both adults and students. Those under age 10 are free. ? Editor C.J. Carnacchio
