Clio — It took the Goodrich Martians Varsity Football team about 13 minuets, 10 possessions and 16 plays, seven of those for touchdowns to stifle Flint Metro League foe Clio Mustangs 64-8.
The Martians have tallied three wins after dropping the season opener to Frankenmuth. The ship appears to have been righted since the shutout loss as the Martians have since outscored opponents 173-15.
“I’m not certain the Frankenmuth loss woke us up, it did not seem we were sleeping, but that’s a fair statement,” said Head Coach Tom Alward. “ I had a bad game at Frankenmuth and tried to get better. But they are very good. We took our whipping and now move on.”
“Clio is doing some good things,” said Alward. “They are going to much better down the road.”
Alward said there’s plenty to still build upon.
“Penalties are still a concern, that in a tight game will come back to hurt,” said Alward, after his Martians committed three for 35 yards. “We also had a couple touchdowns called back at Clio. We just can’t do that. We want to play championship football, if they other team is having a bad night we don’t want to play down to that.
GHS Chase Burnett had five carries for 145 yards and three TDs; GHS #3 Luke Alward had two carries for 36 yards and one; GHS #22 Colton Burnett one carry for 23 yards and a TD and GHS #15 Thomas three carries for 62 yards and one TD.
