15 years ago – 1995
‘Mayor’s son turns entrepreneur? Curt Catallo, son of Clarkston Mayor Sharron Catallo, proposed converting the vacant, former Church of God on Main Street into a tavern, in an idea similar to the ‘Sanctum,? a night club established in a former Pontiac Baptist church.
‘Mentors show students the high-tech future? Angie Lovelace, student at Oakland Technical Center Northwest, got to drive an M-1 main battle tank as part of her mentorship at U.S. Army Tank Automotive and Armament Command in Warren. She and her classmates learned about technology, electronics, and computers.

25 years ago – 1985
‘Family skiers ready for regional races? Downhill skiing was a sport for the MacAlpine family, Karen and Doug, and their children Doug Jr. and Amy. They all raced in the Equitable Family Ski Challenge at Pine Knob Ski Resort. They won three classes and advanced to the regionals.
‘Layoffs loom with school budget? Clarkston Community Schools faced a $600,000 deficit out of a budget of $17 million, caused by a decline in enrollment, especially at the junior high. Enrollment dropped 106 pupils to 6,030.
‘Teacher, 80, receives dual tribute? Louise Russell received a standing ovation from Clarkston Board of Education and audience, honored for her work in adult literacy in the Community Education Department.

50 years ago – 1960
‘Dance Club has Beatnik Ball? Night Dance Club literally let down their hair and costumed themselves appropriately for the ball. Neighbors wearing tights, turtlenecks, heavy eye makeup or false beards, and berets, barely recognized each other. The dining room was decorated in ‘way out? paintings. Mrs. Jerome Wilford and Mr. Earl Hawke won prizes for best beatchick and beatnik.
‘Young people give illustrated lecture? Clifford Irwin of Clarkston Methodist Church was one of 70 young people from Michigan to attend the United Nations Seminar, sponsored by the World Peace Commission of The Methodist Church of the United States. He presented his findings to Clarkston youth using a slide show.

15 years ago – 1992
‘Car crash kills teen? A 13-year-old Groveland Township girl was killed and four others injured in a collision on Dixie Highway.
‘Man recovering from Christmas Eve crash? A Clarkston man was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Dixie Highway.
‘One injured in New Year’s Eve accident? A man was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Ormond Road in Springfield Township. Police said alcohol was a factor.
‘Reward: Neighbors want tree vandals caught? An Independence Township neighborhood offered a $100 reward for information about who was running over their trees.

25 years ago – 1982
‘Schools can collect summer taxes? A bill signed Dec. 22 by Gov. William Milliken forced collection of summer taxes for school districts. Clarkston School Board set a meeting for public comments.
‘Springfield approves levy? Rushing to meet the Jan. 1 deadline, Springfield Township Board voted to collect half its school taxes in June.
‘First lady shares memories, plan? Paula Parker Blanchard, wife of Gov. James Blanchard, grew up in Clarkston. She recalled meeting friends at Cheeseman’s ice cream parlor and going on errands to Terry’s Market.
‘Cable firm makes new offer? Capital Cities Communications jumped into the Independence Township cable TV bidding war, already involving Omnicom and Multi-Cable.

50 years ago – 1957
‘Chairman named for March of Dimes? Everett Davis was named Clarkston and Independence Township chairman for the 1958 March of Dimes polio drive.
‘Public hearing on proposal for compulsory slaughter of brucellosis reactor cattle? A hearing was set about a plan to slaughter cattle infected with the bacterial disease.
?’Martin Luther? at Baptist Church? The First Baptist Church of Clarkston showed the film, ‘Martin Luther,? about the beginning of the church Reformation.
‘Large crowd at Christmas party? About 450 children attended the Rotary Community Christmas Party. Santa was seated on a platform in front of a background of fir trees.

15 years ago – 1992
‘Wint leaves legacy of community service? Lewis E. Wint died Nov. 13, 1992. He founded Lewis E. Wint & Son TRUST 100 Funeral Home in 1959, and was president of Clarkston Rotary, SCAMP, and North Oakland Chamber of Commerce. He earned the 1001 Citizen of the Year Award and 1983 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.
‘Food for needy flowing in, but is it enough?? Lighthouse North was preparing to serve Thanksgiving dinner to 300 area families, but more were on the waiting list. They asked for donations of food and cash.
‘Imagination and music – Children’s ‘free verse originates in melodies?? Fifth-graders at Clarkston Elementary School listened to music from teacher Sherril Bailey’s saxophone and used it to write poetry.
‘Pupils present findings at international convention? Three students of Oakland Technical Center-Northwest travelled to Florida to present research on energy conservation and climate control to an international climate organization.

25 years ago – 1982
‘Camp Fire opts not to sell Oweki? Camp Fire voted to keep the 120-acre camp on Gulick Lake in Independence Township. The camp was having budget troubles.
?$317,000 school budget drop? Clarkston Community Schools decided to make up the shortfall out of savings, dropping it to $701,275. The budget cut was because of falling state funding.
‘School board agrees on changes in policies? The school board set rules to tighten rules on door-to-door sales, improve child-abuse reporting rules, arrange Medicare for retiring employees, and review teacher-evaluation policy.

50 years ago – 1957
‘Legislator to talk to Republicans? George VanPeursem, speaker of the house in Lansing, was set to address local voters.
‘U.F. drive nears one-third mark? Into the second week of the 1957 United Fund Drive, a third of the goal of $8,329 was collected. Officials were asking for ‘that extra dollar? to help them reach their goal.
‘Special speaker at Methodist church? Robert Hammond, director of Alcohol Education of the Michigan Temperance Foundation was to speak at Clarkston Methodist Church about prevention as well as intervention in alcoholism.
