Adams edges Clarkston by one shot at OAA tournament

The Clarkston golf team’s top four all finished in the top 10 at the second OAA I tournament, but Clarkston still fell one shot short of Rochester Adams.
The Highlanders shot a combined 314, while the Wolves finished with 315. Clarkston also finished in second place in the first OAA I tournament. The Wolves finished two shots behind Bloomfield Hills Lahser.
With the two second-place finishes and a solid dual meet record, Clarkston is in first place in the OAA I with 14 points. The Wolves have three dual meets left. If they win all three, they are guaranteed the OAA championship.
‘Next to winning the tournament, controlling our own destiny is what we wanted,? Clarkston coach Mark Wiegand said. ‘We are disappointed to finish second twice, but our guys did all we could ask. It’s a real competitive league and Adams just beat us. If we win out the rest of the way, we win the league and that’s all we can ask for.?
The Wolves? Matt Fuller finished second overall. Fuller and Lahser’s Chris Matthews each finished with 76. Adams? David Brent shot 75 to earn the individual title.
Clarkston’s other top scorers were Chris Graczyk with 79, and Blake Schmidt and Brandon Stone, each with 80.
‘We have played better, but I think they are still playing solid,? Wiegand said. ‘We need to make sure we are looking at this as a team event. In three tournaments this year, we finished second and by a total of four shots. Every kid knows there is a shot they could have played different to help the team. We have to make sure we are taking shots that are best for the team not the individual.?
The Wolves also finished in fourth place at the Hartland Invitational, which was a two-man best ball.
Blake Schmidt and Derrick Burns combined for 69 and finished second overall.
Clarkston will face Rochester, Lake Orion and Troy to wrap up the conference season. The Wolves will also take part in the Oakland County Meet on Friday.
‘I’m happy with our play this season,? Wiegand said. ‘Hopefully we can play a little better and turn some of these second place finishes into wins.?
