Oxford boys and girls bowlers met 28 of the best teams in the area at the Tri-County-Invitational on Saturday, January 26.
Each team bowled 12 baker games in qualifying, the best 2 of 3 head to head from there on. Both the Wildcats? boys and girls made it to round 16, where the girls were 13 seed and the boys placed 15 seed. Both were matched against Sterling Heights Stevenson. The boys won three games to advance while the girls battled, but ultimately lost.
The boy’s then beat Richmond and Novi Catholic Central to advance to the finals against L’Anse Creuse North. In the finals the Wildcats would win game 1 236 to 149. Game 2 went to L’Anse Creuse North 210 to 193. Game 3 was 190 to 184 in favor of L’Anse Creuse North. Oxford again would finish runner up for the second time this season.
‘These boys are something else, they just battle and battle. This is a great experience for these kids. I’m so proud of how they performed all day,? said Varsity Head Coach JR Lafnear. ‘Being the 15th seed and making it all the way to the finals was a tough road. There are some really great programs here and to finish second is a real accomplishment.?
Prior to the Tri-County-Tourney, both the girls and boys went to Oakland County Championships.
‘High school bowling in Oakland County has now grown to 28 boy teams and 27 girl teams,? Lafnear noted.
The girls lost in round one, which was a shock because in the eight years of Oxford Bowling the girls have made the cut all eight years. The boys were seeded seventh coming out of qualifying beat Walled Lake Northern to advance to the top eight. There they meet OAA rival Troy and lost a close match. Troy went on to win the title.
On the same Day Oxford sent 2 squads of JV bowlers to the Flint Metro Championships in Flint. Both teams performed very well. Jv Bowlers that bowled well were Freshmen Luke Delong, who had a 665 series, Freshmen Jason Clark had a 619 series and Sophomore Andrew McKenzie had a 616 series. Oxfords Blue team advanced into the final 4 of the JV bracket against some stiff competition. In the Finals were powerhouse programs, Tecumseh, Davison, and Kearsley. Oxford would beat Tecumseh in round 1 to advance to finals against Davison. Oxford would beat Davison to win the title.
‘I really am proud of both squads,? Lafnear said. ‘They did a great job representing Oxford and the future looks pretty good I think?
