Grant will fund new fire fighting clothing

The Orion Township Fire Department has received a grant of $93,038, which will allow them to replace the protective clothing worn by fire fighters.
The grant, from the Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant Program run by the Department of Homeland Security, was formally accepted by the township board at their Dec. 4 meeting.
The grant project is intended to bring turnout coats and bunker pants up to current NFPA standards. In addition, the department will be purchasing the specialized equipment necessary to properly clean the protective clothing.
The money awarded is 90 percent of the total estimated project cost, meaning the fire department must match the remaining cost of $10,337. This was also approved by the board at the Dec. 4 meeting.
