Dragon wrestlers went 3-4 during the first week of 2010. Wednesday Jan. 6, they traveled to Rochester High School for a quad meet against Stoney Creek and Rochester.
In the first dual against Stoney Creek, Lake Orion trailed by three points with two matches left. Then, Matt Musary (125) pinned his opponent and John Atwater (130) sealed the win with a 10 – 0 victory.
Lake Orion came out on top of Stoney Creek, 37 – 30.
In the second match-up of the night, Rochester beat Lake Orion 54 – 20.
Saturday, Jan. 9, Lake Orion traveled to Adrian for five dual matches. Dragons ended 2 – 3 on the day.
The team won against Jackson and Howell, but lost to Southgate Anderson, Adrian, and Hudson, the number one ranked team in Division 4.
Dom Arnold (145), Adam Gros (171), Willie Stewart (215), and Musary all went 6 – 1 on the week. Josh Hofmann (189) went 5 – 2, while Anthony Gerard (112) picked up four wins and Ethan Gros (140) won three matches.
Devon Ellis (130), Alec Grzadzinski (135), Devon Meadows (160), Demitri Hudson (160), all had two victories each on the week.
Juan Leon (119) and Dan Deachin (152) picked up their first varsity wins in Adrian. Durham Basso (152) and Nate Ring (285) were in the lineup this week and picked up important varsity experience.
Lake Orion has had eight wrestling events and eight lineup changes due to injuries and illnesses, but the changes have allowed several young wrestlers to receive valuable varsity experience.
Head Coach Cory Kuzinski said, ‘The boys competed hard at Rochester and Adrian in spite of some injuries to key components of our team. I am happy to see them coming together and really care about how each other performs.?
Lake Orion is now 11 – 7 overall, and will host a home quad meet against Detroit Catholic Central and Troy Wednesday, Jan. 13. It will be alumni night and players and coaches from the 1990 State championship team will be in attendance for a 20-year reunion.
