“I will walk again”

John Layman is a determined person.
Although he may still lose his leg to infection, or at the very least have to wear a brace on his severely damaged knee, Layman vowed to his doctor, ‘I will walk again,? according to Sue Pendred, owner of Art & Dick’s Party Store.
Layman is currently recovering at The Lakeland Center in Southfield from the June 7 accident in which one of his legs was run over by a gravel train at the intersection of M-24 and Burdick Street.
Pendred, who keeps in close contact with Layman’s mother, reported the 52-year-old ? known to locals as ‘The Mayor? ? is ‘doing well? and his ‘spirits are up.? He wants residents to know that ‘Oxford is the greatest city there ever was.?
A few weeks ago, Layman’s damaged leg required skin grafts. He has since developed an infection in the leg, but it’s being treated with antibotics and the outcome is ‘looking good,? Pendred said. However, there’s still a chance he could lose the leg as a result of infection.
In addition to the many well wishes residents have sent Layman, he’s also received $860 in donations, some of which Pendred said will be used to buy John a new pair of presciption eyeglasses. His glasses were broken during the accident.
However, since the accident, doctors say Layman’s eyes have changed and his old prescription is no longer valid, according to his mother.
Unfortunately, his mother can’t locate an eyedoctor to give John an exam at the hospital to get a new prescription.
Those wishing to send well wishes or donations to Layman can drop them off at Art & Dick’s Party Store, 81 W. Burdick. For more info contact Sue Pendred at (248) 628-4376.
