Lakeville Elementary’s school sign was sturdy enough to handle lots of things ? rain, snow, wind, the blazing sun.
The only thing it couldn’t survive was an SUV coming straight at it.
A 1998 Dodge Durango, driven by a 47-year-old Oxford woman, smashed into the sign around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, reducing it to a crumpled pile of scrap metal.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s report, the driver was eastbound on Lakeville Rd. when a deer ran in front of her vehicle causing her to swerve and lose control. The Durango left the roadway and struck a street sign. Ironically, it was a yellow Caution/Deer Crossing sign.
The SUV continued heading east, still off the roadway, until it crashed into the Lakeville Elementary sign and stopped.
According to the sheriff’s report, the Durango traveled approximately 200 feet off the road after striking the first sign.
In the report, she told the deputy that ‘she may have pushed the gas pedal at the same time she was trying to apply the brakes.?
The motorist was issued a ticket for driving without due care and caution.
