Letter to the Editor: VFW collecting labels, box tops to help kids

Kathy Hubbard, a member of the VFW Auxiliary 334, is collecting labels and box tops from such companies as Campbell’s, Pepperidge Farm, Prego, V8, Goldfish, Pop-Secret, Dannon, Post and Glad. Hubbard says,
‘These labels will be used to provide new computers for the Learning Lab at the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Michigan and the box tops will be used to provide items needed for the 29 children in the Nursery,? Hubbard said.
The VFW National Home for Children was founded in 1925 with one old frame farm house.
Today it’s a sprawling campus with 40 single family homes. It has a community center, child care center, fire station, chapel, museum, administrative offices as well as playgrounds and parks.
All the children at the VFW National Home attend schools in Eaton Rapids and are transported to and from schools in six vans that have all been paid for with labels from these food products.
Hubbard reports that the goal is to collect 10,000 labels and box tops and so far has received 4,000 labels and more than 2,000 box tops.
She would greatly appreciate it if people would neatly clip and collect labels and box tops then mail them to her home at 108 Schorn Drive, Lake Orion, MI 48362.
Or they can drop them off at the American Legion/VFW Hall at 130 East Drahner Road in Oxford, Attn: Kathy Hubbard. Hubbard’s phone number is 248-693-6759.
The VFW National Home for Children is for children of military families whose father or mother or both have been killed in action.
There are babies and children up to the age of graduation from high school, according to Hubbard. Nearly all the children that live at the National Home become college graduates with financial help from VFW Posts.
The VFW National Home is a nonprofit organization with a National Home Helpline, 1-800-313-4200, for military or veteran families in crisis. Michigan has provided four homes at the National Home paid for by VFW Posts and Ladies Auxiliary Members.
Jim Hubbard, Kathy’s husband, is Commander of North Oakland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 334 which meets at the Hall at 130 East Drahner Road in Oxford.
