Men 55 and over, sponsor needed for softball team

Getting older doesn’t mean being relegated to playing checkers on the front porch or waiting for an opening on the shuffleboard court.
Softball offers seniors a way to stay active, engage in friendly competition and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine like a kid again.
Oxford Township Parks and Recreation is looking to start a softball team for men age 55 and older to play in a senior league run by Oakland County.
‘It’s not just the newly retired people that are looking for something to do,? said Becky Paquin, who’s in charge of ‘over 55 programs? for Oxford Township Parks and Recreation. ‘Some of them are 70-75 years old.?
Paquin is looking for 12 men who are age 55 (or will turn 55 during this calender year) and older plus a team sponsor.
And she needs them both by April 14.
‘We need more stuff for seniors to do,? she said. ‘Right now, there’s not a lot for the over 55 crowd.?
Addison resident Bill Devine, who will turn 69 next month, said senior softball offers ‘camaraderie, spirited play, good exercise? and ‘good times.?
Devine played for the Lake Orion Lakers for two years and coached the team last year. ‘I started that team,? he said. ‘They all enjoy it. They all come back every year.?
The Oxford team would play 30 daytime games between May and August, according to Paquin.
‘You can have up to 18 players on a roster,? she noted.
With regard to cost, Paquin said, ‘I’m hoping it will cost (the players) nothing.?
That’s why she’s seeking a generous sponsor to cover the $150 team fee, umpire fees at every game and uniform costs.
Those interested in sponsoring or playing should call Becky Paquin at (248) 628-1720.
