In efforts to raise money for substance abuse prevention programs, the North Oakland Community Coalition is holding a Hometown Heroes barbeque.
According to Project Coordinator for NOCC, Barb Pote, the Hometown Heroes event is their way of supporting the Orion Township Fire Department.
For $3 a person, or $10 for a four-person family, attendees receive hot dogs, beans, chips and lemonade for a lunch, and a opportunity to tour Fire Station #3 off Gregory Road. Attendees can view fire trucks up close, and learn about fire safety.
‘I think that is it always a good thing to honor hometown heroes that put themselves at risk for our safety, and that’s what the NOCC wants to do,? Pote said.
Children ages three to 10 can participate in a fire safety contest by creating a poster of what it means to stay safe.
Participants need to bring their drawing to the barbeque, where fire fighters will determine two winners. The winners will be notified the week following the event. Winners will receive movies, food and drink passes to attend the movie Planes, Fire and Rescue at Oxford 7 theater.
‘It’s a strong community and family focused event with fire men and trucks there for kids to see,? Pote said. ‘We encourage families and children to come and see what our fire department does for you.?
