How big is a million?
Scientists say the largest number our brains can comprehend is 100,000.
Well, the students at Liberty Middle School in New Jersey are on a mission to see what a million looks like and the third-graders in Oxford Elementary teacher Krista Rushlow’s class decided to help.
Throughout the month of February, OES students collected about 62,000 soda can tabs to send to the East Coast school as students there attempt to collect 1 million of them.
Liberty Middle School plans to donate the aluminum tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in New Jersey. The charity receives 35-40 cents per pound based on the market price of aluminum and uses the money to help pay for operations.
According to Rushlow, OES students participated as a way to do some community service and satisfy a curriculum requirement for them to do an on-line collaborative project.
It was also a good math lesson.
