A passionate commitment to serving the community has led Oxford resident and Central Michigan University student Pamela Barclay to earn a prestigious award.
Michigan Campus Compact presented its awards during an April 14 ceremony at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Center. CMU students received 23 of the 109 awards given to students from 25 Michigan campuses.
The 2000 Oxford High School graduate earned the Outstanding Community Impact award, Michigan Campus Compact’s highest student award, which is presented annually to one graduate student and five undergraduate students in Michigan who have made service an integral part of their college experience through significant contributions to their communities.
As part of the award, students are given $200 to donate to an organization of their choice. Barclay, a graduate assistant in CMU’s Volunteer Center, contributed her money to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, a cause that hits close to home.
‘Since being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at the age of 13, CCFA has provided me with many resources,? Barclay said.
Recently, Barclay has volunteered at CCFA’s Camp Oasis, a special needs camp for children who have been diagnosed with digestive diseases, and CCFA’s Guts and Glory Walk to raise funds to support research and find a cure.
To be eligible for a Michigan Campus Compact award, a student must be nominated by a faculty or staff member.
Once nominated, the student must complete an application, obtain one letter of recommendation and write essays about his or her volunteer experiences. A committee of Michigan Campus Compact members then reviews the applications and selects recipients in the award categories.
