One Brandon hoops program apparently is enough for Bryan Ray.
Ray resigned March 19 as the Blackhawks’ boys basketball coach, but will stay on as the girls basketball coach. Brandon recently wrapped up their season with a 14-9 overall record, finishing in second place behind Lapeer East in its first year in the Flint Metro League.
The Blackhawks made it to the district finals before losing to Clarkston 52-38 on March 8 at Oxford.
“What it came down to was to put in the time to coach both programs well was too hard on my family, so I decided to give up one of them,” Ray said in explaining his decision.
Ray and wife Lisa have two sons: Griffin, 6, and Logan, 4.
He thinks whomever takes the reins as the next boys basketball coach will be in good shape.
“We’ve moved the program up to the Class A level in the last four years,” Ray said. “The kids are getting an understanding of what it takes to compete at the state level. I’ve fulfilled my goals for the program. I think we have good assistant coaches that can take the program to the next level.”
