BRANDON- Jason Katt has left the Brandon football program without coaching a game for the Blackhawks.
The move comes only a week after Katt, formerly the defensive coordinator at Lowell (Mich.) High School, was hired to replace the retired Jim Watkins as the Blackhawks’ head varsity football coach.
According to Brandon Athletic Director Larry Lamphere, Katt wanted to bring one of his own assistant coaches on the staff. When Lamphere decided against the move, Katt stepped down from the job.
“He thought he needed somebody, and I didn’t think that was the person we needed in the program,” Lamphere said. “He then had some second thoughts about taking the position.”
Katt could not be reached for comment as of press time.
Lamphere said the athletic department will begin another search for the man to replace Watkins as the Blackhawks’ gridiron leader.
Before taking the Brandon job, Katt was the linebackers coach as well as defensive coordinator for five years at Lowell, which won the Division 2 State Football Championship this past season.
He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1995 with a major in English and a minor in history. He also holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University.
