Spikers sent home with a loss

The varsity volleyball team was unable to put together a complete game against Ortonville-Brandon last Thursday, and consequently was sent home with a loss.
The match lasted five games, but Oxford could not prevail. The Ladycats lost the first game 25-19, rebounded to win the second game 25-15, dropped the third 25-17, and won the fourth 25-21 to force a fifth and final game.
Oxford went up on the BlackHawks 9-5, before letting up and allowing Brandon to sneak back into the game and actually take the lead. The fifth game ended with Oxford defeated 15-13.
‘I don’t know if we give in, give up, or give out under close circumstances,? said head coach Kristi McDevitt. ‘All I do know is it has happened three times this season, and each time we had the lead and (lost) it.?
McDevitt said that her squad would be working hard to remedy the situation in the next few practices.
‘These athletes need to acquire a taste for winning and going the extra distance when their backs are against the wall,? she said.
In the match, junior Danielle Wicker had the game high 13 kills, and junior Kaitlin DuCharme had 10 kills in the losing effort. Sophomore Karlyn Stroope had 8 kills and 5 blocks on the night.
Oxford is now 4-3 in the FML and 16-8-4 overall.
The varsity Ladycats face off on Thursday against the undefeated Lapeer East Eagles at Oxford. Game time is 7 pm.
