When Brian Brougham joined the Boy Scouts as a Tiger Cub when he was in first grade, he said the whole thing seemed appealing to him.
‘We got to shoot BB guns and stuff like that, so it seemed pretty cool. The more I did it, the more I liked it,? said the Oxford High School junior. ‘By the time I got into Boy Scouts I realized I wanted to be an Eagle Scout.?
Brougham, who is a member of Troop 108 achieved his goal as he was awarded his Eagle Scout patch and medal on Sept. 17 at Oxford American Legion Post 108. As part of his receiving his Eagle Scout badge, he had to do one last project. After getting a call from Oxford Middle School teacher Mark Forester, Brougham decided to build a bridge behind the middle school. He was able to build it for $750.
‘There is a small ravine, which is about 13 feet wide roughly; that’s where the cross-country team and track team like to practice. It became kind of a hazard, kids trying to jump across (it were) popping their ankles and stuff like that,? he said. ‘That’s when Mr. Forester asked me to build it, so that bridge would be there for a long time.?
Being a Boy Scout, Brougham said has taught him hard work, how to be trustworthy, dedication and leadership.
‘It’s really just good for you in every way,? he added.
As for reaching the status of Eagle Scout, Brougham said he’s overwhelmed with emotion.
‘It’s basically the biggest thing I’ve done in my life so far,? he said. ‘It’s not only such a relief that I finally finished, but also so much joy that I was able to accomplish a goal that not many people get to do.?
