Improvements to intersections at Flemings Lakes and Clarkston roads and Walters and Waldon roads are expected by early spring.
Independence Township entered into a cooperative agreement with Clarkston schools in fall 2011 to install left-turn signals and no-turn-on-red signs.
‘There was a need to provide protected left turns at the intersections,? said Randy Ford, senior associate with Township engineering firm Hubbell Roth & Clark.
The project is being paid through tri-party funds. It was originally estimated to cost was $35,000, but bids came in much lower. Out of four bids, the township awarded the project to lowest bidder, Metropolitan Power and Lighting based in Imlay City.
The bid came in at $12,816.
‘We did review this with the county, they were quite surprised by the number,? said Ford. ‘I am confident there is going to be a real cost savings to the school district.?
Trustee David Lohmeier thanks Ford for his ‘diligence? along with Department of Public Works Director Linda Richardson and ‘everyone else involved? in the project.
Trustee Larry Rosso agreed.
‘It’s a good use of our tri-party money that we haven’t been able to use,? he said.
