Drivers donated more than $11,000 to Clarkston Area Lions during its White Cane Week, this past April.
“We wish to thank everyone for their support,” said Lion Jerry Baumgart, chairperson. “Money raised during White Cane Week also allows the Lions to provide eyeglass and hearing aid support to those in need, as well as free vision screening for pre-school children.”
All funds collected will be used to support sight and hearing projects including Leader Dogs for the Blind, Michigan Eye Bank and Transplant Center, Lions Bear Lake Camp for Physically Challenged Youth, Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Beaumont Silent Children Fund, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Madonna University’s Office of Disability Resources, and Lions Hearing Center of Michigan.
The Lions also supports Lighthouse, Offering Alternative Therapy with Smiles, Independence and Springfield township Libraries, and SCAMP.
“We sometimes have people who apologize for only having a few coins to put in our collection canister. We always assure them that every little bit helps,” Baumgart said. ” It only takes 10 cents to pay the expenses to fit a pair of used eyeglasses to someone in a third world country.”
