Linden — On Oct. 13 the Goodrich Martians Varsity Football team defeated the Linden Eagles 42-7 in a Flint Metro League game at Linden High School.
The Martians improved to 7-1 while the Eagles dropped to 4-3 on the season.
“We were effective at throwing the ball,” said Head Coach Tom Alward. “We’ve been close to a balanced attack but often, our running game has overshadowed our play. As a team our players are really starting to play well, just a few too many penalties. That can be a real drive killer.”
As of Oct. 19 the Martians hold the number one playoff points in D4 statewide due to a rigorous schedule.
“We play some good competition,” said Alward. “It makes us a better team.”
The Martians defense stepped up and shut the Eagles out in three quarters allowing 219 yards of total offense with 106 yards through the air and only 113 on the ground. The Martians had 170 yards passing with 122 rushing. The Eagles had three turnovers. The Martians committed seven penalties for 44 yards, while the Eagles had two for 10 yards.
GHS Sr. #2 Easton Phipps completed six of 12 passes for 170 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. GHS Jr. #25 had 17 carries for 82 yards and one touchdown; Phipps had five carries for 21 yards and one touchdown and GHS Soph. #24 Jakoby Lagat had three carries for 20 yards. GHS #9 Jr. Max Macklem caught five passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
