Lake Fenton —  The Powers Chargers Varsity Baseball team scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second then held on to a 5-2 win over the Goodrich Martians in the District 61 semi finals at Linden on June 1.
The Martian season ended with a 28-9-1 record.
GHS Gavin Dunn pitched four innings, one earned run, one hit, two walks and four strikeouts. GHS Cross Darby pitched three innings, no earned runs, gave up one hit, one walk and fanned four. The Martians committed a two out error in the first inning that plated three Charger runs.
The Martians scored two in the fourth inning and brought the tying run to the plate in the fifth inning, but could not bring any runs across. GHS Cole Illijanic had a two RBI double, GHS Parker Pannell and Cross Darby each had hits.
“We needed to be perfect and we weren’t,” said Head Coach Ben Almasy. “A couple early mistakes put us behind and we couldn’t catch up with the pitchers they have. “I think our team hit them better than anyone this year, but it just wasn’t enough. Very proud of this group, we are just getting started.”
